Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is joining other Republican governors and state attorneys general in bringing a challenge of the Affordable Care Act to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Arizona and 26 other states are challenging some of the coverage and Medicaid mandates in the reforms which are backed by President Barack Obama.
Lower federal courts have issued a mix of rulings on various challenges to the law, including whether the federal government can mandate businesses and individuals to offer or have health insurance, and whether states can lose federal funding for not following new Medicaid mandates.
Arizona and other states are petitioning the Supreme Court to hear the health care case and determine whether the law is constitutional.
“As a champion of states’ rights, I applaud the decision to appeal directly to the United States Supreme Court at this critical juncture,” said Brewer in a statement. “ObamaCare represents a fiscal and regulatory nightmare for states like Arizona that are already dealing with an ongoing budget crisis.
“The sooner this case can be heard by the nation’s highest court, the better for state budgets and personal freedom.”
