They Said WHAT?! The 25 Most Unlikely Palin Fans – #14 Bill and Hillary Clinton

If Nicole wants a war over this series, then doggone it, she’ll get a bloody war.

We are almost halfway through this thing, and I figure it’s time to bring out both a President and the woman who came closest to being President: Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Look, obviously, it will be a cold day in Hope before either of these two throws his or her support towards the Guv, but that doesn’t mean we can’t shamelessly exploit their kind words for our humble blog, right? Right.

Aaaaanyways, back in September 2008, Slick Willy sat down for an interview with CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo. Here is part of that exchange:

BARTIROMO: Were you surprised by the Palin bounce, for the McCain campaign?

CLINTON: No, she’s an instinctively effective candidate, with a compelling story, and I think it was exiting to some that she was a woman. It was exciting that she was from Alaska, exciting that she’s sort of like the person she is. And she grew up in a, came up in a political culture and a religious culture that is probably well to the right of the American centre. But she didn’t basically define herself in those terms. She basically said, ‘Look, this is where I’m from. I’m not going to impose myself on you. This is what I want to do that I think we can all be a part of.’ So, she handled herself very well. So, I, no, I wasn’t surprised. I think she— I get why she’s done so well. She, she— It would be a mistake to underestimate her. She’s got good intuitive skills. They’re significant. (Emphasis added)

Clinton would later repeat his caution to Democrats: “I think she’s clearly a public figure who is— who speaks well and persuasively to the people who listen to her, and she’s somebody to be reckoned with. And she’s tough!”

As an added bonus, here is what Hillary Clinton had to say about Governor Palin’s debate performance against Ol’ Hair Plugs in an interview with Ryan Seacrest:

I think she’s very good! I always thought she would do well. Look, I mean, it’s amazing. She’s been thrust into the national spotlight, with very little preparation, and I think, all things considered, you saw a very composed and effective debater last night.

Of course, both Clintons’ support for Obama was grudging, at best, following the bruising 2008 Democratic primaries, but even still, their words about Palin ring true. She is her own woman and can say so with eloquence and grace. Geminder, out!
