Pelosi: Republican Jews are “being exploited” by Republicans

Nancy Pelosi recently sat down for an interview with Bloomberg’s Al Hunt. Most of the interview was your basic, garden variety nonsense from San Fran Nan: Democrats are interested in cutting the deficit (by $4 trillion, she clams) but those Wascally Wepublicans won’t let them; Republicans want to give money away to rich people (how allowing citizens to keep their own money is a giveaway is unclear); raising taxes on nearly a million small businesses when the economy is stalled will be great for the middle class and job creation; etc., etc. As I said, pretty standard left-wing calumny from Pelosi.

Anyway, the interview got rather interesting when the topic turned to Israel (emphasis added):

HUNT: Do you think he’ll do as well with the Jewish vote this time as he did last time?

PELOSI: The election will tell us that.

HUNT: What do you think?

PELOSI: But I – I think that he will. I think that he will, because the fact is when the facts get out. You know, as many of the Republicans are using Israel as an excuse, what they really want are tax cuts for the wealthy. So Israel, that can be one reason they put forth.

HUNT: That’s why some of the Republican Jewish supporters are really active.

PELOSI: Well, that’s how they’re being exploited. And they’re smart people. They follow these issues. But they have to know the facts. And the fact is that President Obama has been the strongest person in terms of sanctions on Iran, which is important to Israel. He’s been the strongest person on whether it’s Iron Dome, David’s Sling, any of these weapons systems and initiatives that relate to Israel. He has been there over and over again.

Daniel Halper and William Kristol, both of the Weekly Standard, flagged these bizarre statements from Ms. Pelosi. Pelosi seems to be suggesting that, although Republican Jewish supporters are “smart people”, they’re not smart enough to avoid being “exploited” by those conniving Republicans who are just “using Israel as an excuse” to cut taxes. Or something. If only they were a little smarter, presumably, they’d wholeheartedly embrace an Administration which wants to raise taxes in this economy and has been the most hostile to Israel as any administration since at least Jimmy Carter’s and, indeed, won’t even name Israel’s capital for fear of offending Israel’s mortal enemies.  Gotcha, Nancy.

Kristol takes her to task for the demonstrably false claim that Obama’s been to Israel “over and over again”:

Daniel Halper has called attention to Nancy Pelosi’s remarkable interview with Al Hunt on the topic of Barack Obama and Israel. I’d note one comment in particular: Pelosi’s claim that President Obama “has been there [Israel] over and over again.”

Wow. I’m involved with the Emergency Committee for Israel. We have an ad up in several states calling attention to the fact that President Obama, who’s been quite the world traveler, has never visited Israel as president. Did we make a terrible mistake? Were we unjust to President Obama? Do we have to pull down the ad?

No, no, and no. Contrary to Pelosi’s apparent claim, President Obama hasn’t been to Israel over and over again. He’s never been as president, which is certainly what Pelosi implied. Well, maybe he visited Israel “over and over” before becoming president, and that’s what Pelosi meant to say? No. When he was senator, Obama went on two trips to Israel, once with several other freshmen members of Congress, and then as a presidential candidate. And he’d never been interested enough in Israel to visit as a private citizen. So much for the notion that Obama’s been “over and over again.”

I know I’ve said it before, but clearly there’s something not quite right in that empty head. But it’s hard to complain too much, I suppose. From a blogger’s perspective, she’s priceless: each and every one of her musings provide us with endless material. And politically, it’s fantastic for conservatives that the Democrat Party, in their infinite wisdom, chose to let her remain as the leader and spokesperson for their House caucus after she “led” them to an epic 63 seat defeat in the 2010 midterms. I remember thinking back then that Democrats couldn’t possibly be that suicidal:

…this morning I heard something on MSNBC (I was bored) that would be very good news if true. The latest rumor is that Nancy Pelosi is calling allies in the House (those who survived, presumably) and attempting to determine if there is still support for her leadership in the shrunken Democrat caucus. Let’s hope there is, and that she becomes House Minority Leader. Additionally, on the Senate side, Harry Reid remains Senate Majority Leader. Obviously we would have liked to have seen Dingy Harry retired and replaced with a true constitutional conservative, but that didn’t happen. There is, however, a silver lining: if House Democrats keep Nancy Murkowski Pelosi as their leader, Republicans will once again be able to run against the Obama-Reid-Pelosi agenda in 2012. This would truly be the gift that keeps on giving. It’s difficult to imagine Democrats are that dumb, but then again…they are Democrats.

They were that dumb, as we all know, and San Fran Nan is still the face of the House Democrat caucus. Every day this loss remains as leader of House Democrats is a good day for Republicans because, as Governor Palin succinctly observed last month, Pelosi’s a “dingbat”:
