Don’t let anyone fool you: Everyone in politics is tempted to believe that their noble ends could justify unethical and illegal means.

Those who had hoped that President Obama would usher in a new era of higher standards in Washington must be shell-shocked by last week’s revelations:

-The Internal Revenue Service admitted to delaying conservative organizations’ tax-exempt status while quickly approving groups that had liberal or progressive orientations. The IRS asked these groups all sorts of invasive questions, including what kind of books they read, and leaked some information to the media.

-The Department of Justice secretly obtained two months worth of telephone records of Associated Press journalists, more than 20 separate phone lines — a stunning amount of snooping into the interactions between reporters and their sources.

-The Environmental Protection Agency has reportedly been waiving fees for Freedom of Information Act requests from environmental groups while keeping them in place for conservative groups.

-Gregory Hicks, a career State Department employee whose account of events in Benghazi contradicted the administration’s initial claims that it was tied to a YouTube video, said he was harangued and demoted for not toeing the line.

WASHINGTON — So far, voters don’t seem to be abandoning President Barack Obama over controversies gripping the Beltway world. But White House aides are tempting fate with their reluctant, piecemeal and contradictory disclosures of what they knew and when they knew it, especially about a report on the Internal Revenue Service’s 18-month effort to target tea party and other conservative groups for special scrutiny.

The aides either have forgetten or are unable to implement the basic lesson of scandal control in Washington: Get the full story out — all of it — as fast as you can before your critics accuse you of a cover-up or worse.

It’s been only a week since the president told the world that he had learned about the “outrageous” actions of the IRS’ Cincinnati office from “news reports” on May 10. We now know that those reports stemmed from a disclosure the administration had planned and that, in fact, “senior officials” in the White House knew the essence of a damning inspector general’s report on the matter as early as April 24.

From the start, the White House’s response on this potentially explosive matter has been grudging at best and, in retrospect, ignorant or arrogant or both.

Democrats are obviously not happy with the idea of disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner running for mayor of New York City. In an editorial meeting with some local newspapers, New York governor Andrew Cuomo said “shame on us,” if Weiner is elected.

Rogers: “So if Anthony Weiner wants to run for mayor, he can run for mayor.”

Cuomo: “He runs? He runs.”

Rogers: “And if we elect him?”

Cuomo: “Shame on us.”

Other than the fact that his own Democrats are already turning against him, Weiner has a number of other problems on his hands above and beyond the extra-marital sexting that forced his resignation from Congress.

For starters, Weiner cannot say that other pictures might not bubble up. But worse than that is that he is unable to say for certain that those he engaged in this kind of behavior with were of age.

Finally, above and beyond the salaciousness of the scandal, Weiner repeatedly lied to his constituents and the media for days about his behavior and also attempted to smear Andrew Breitbart, the man who factually and accurately broke what would become known as Weinergate.

The link goes to this public letter from Roger Ailes to Fox employees:

Dear colleagues,

The recent news about the FBI’s seizure of the phone and email records of Fox News employees, including James Rosen, calls into question whether the federal government is meeting its constitutional obligation to preserve and protect a free press in the United States. We reject the government’s efforts to criminalize the pursuit of investigative journalism and falsely characterize a Fox News reporter to a Federal judge as a “co-conspirator” in a crime. I know how concerned you are because so many of you have asked me: why should the government make me afraid to use a work phone or email account to gather news or even call a friend or family member? Well, they shouldn’t have done it. The administration’s attempt to intimidate Fox News and its employees will not succeed and their excuses will stand neither the test of law, the test of decency, nor the test of time. We will not allow a climate of press intimidation, unseen since the McCarthy era, to frighten any of us away from the truth.

An article written over at The Hill reveals just how inept D.C. politicians and the media really are. No wonder our country is in the mess it’s in.

Written by Alexander Bolton, it states:

Tea Party activists from around the country are eager to see Sarah Palin run for the Senate, but Republican senators themselves aren’t rushing to recruit her.

A recent poll shows Palin would lead the Republican field if she ran for Senate in Alaska. And while Tea Party activists are running a “Draft Sarah” campaign, Republican leaders in Washington appear decidedly less interested in the prospect.

Bolton then goes on to explain that while the people (voters) would love to have Governor Palin serve in elected office again (as proven by the poll), apparently some in D.C. don’t think it’s such a hot idea. (Interestingly, some in D.C. seem to be getting easily annoyed at Senator Ted Cruz, too.)

Some Republicans in Washington don’t think Palin, who resigned as governor with 18 months left in her term, would be the best candidate to challenge Democratic Sen. Mark Begich (Alaska).

As such, he quotes Lisa Murkowski:

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who has feuded with Palin in the past, said the former Alaska governor has become detached from the state.

“I think there are a lot of outside interests that would like to see Sarah Palin in some form of elected office. Most in Alaska recognize our former governor is really not involved in or engaged in the state anymore, that she’s moved to other interests,” Murkowski said. “In order for you to represent the state of Alaska, you’ve got to be in the state.”

Despite the same article reflecting a poll that shows Governor Palin leading among the others considered to be contenders for Alaska’s Senate seat in 2014 (including a current Lt. Governor), Murkowski who probably spends more time in D.C. apparently has been busy tracking Governor Palin’s personal travel schedule and involvement with her state. And although the Alaskan people who spend more time in the state apparently disagree with the Senator, she seems quite eager to tell them what to think.

Typical elitist attitudes like this that thrive more on personal ego and that perhaps stem from old wounds speak truth to Governor Palin’s words at her recent NRA speech when she said that many in Washington are “in it for themselves.”

The article continues to remind readers what Murkowski said a couple years back when Governor Palin was considering a run for the White House in 2012.

“I just do not think that she has those leadership qualities, that intellectual curiosity that allows for building good and great policies.”

Really? Well then not only does Lisa Murkowski obviously disagree with her constituents now with regard to their desire to have Governor Palin in elected office again, but the Senator must not have spent enough time in Alaska to know that the voters gave Governor Palin the highest approval rating ever after she implemented her “leadership qualities” that led to “good and great policies.” That of course came after Governor Palin unseated Murkowski’s father which sort of suggests that perhaps the Senator still may have an axe to grind.

Moving on, the article also quotes Senator John McCain:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who put Palin on the national stage when he picked her as his vice presidential running mate in 2008, said she would be “great” addition to the Senate.

“I think she’d be fantastic,” he said. “She has a great national following, and I think she would have an immediate impact.”

Of course she would. But judging by Senator McCain’s recent treatment of Ted Cruz, one has to wonder just how much he’d welcome such an “immediate impact.”

Finally, the article quotes the man responsible for this effort to “draft” Governor Palin:

“The Tea Party Leadership Fund has a broad audience of grassroots conservative activists, and they feel very strongly that she’s a champion of their values and would love to see her run, and we’re doing everything we can to see her run,” said Dan Backer, the fund’s treasurer.

Backer said the Senate Republican conference needs more members in the mold of Tea Party favorites, such as Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Backer says Palin has yet to comment on the campaign to draft her for the 2014 Senate race.

With all due respect, if someone is leading an effort to “draft” someone they believe in, one would believe that same person would pay attention to Governor Palin’s official PAC when its Treasurer, Tim Crawford releases the following statement:

Governor Palin is grateful and honored by those Americans who support her and her beliefs. However, the draft Sarah Palin for Senate fundraising campaign initiated by the Tea Party Leadership Fund is not authorized, endorsed or supported by Governor Palin or SarahPAC.

Stacy posted that statement on May 10th. That means that almost two full weeks have passed since then. Therefore, it makes one stop and wonder just why it is we have new momentum on the topic via comments made by politicians which are delivered by a media who all seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that SarahPAC has clearly stated that this mission is not one they support or endorse.

It scares Americans when we common folks seem to remain one step ahead of those in D.C. who are in charge of making our laws and the media who is supposed to be informing us instead of it being the other way around.

If Governor Palin chooses to run for elected office, she’ll tell us when the time comes. It’s perfectly healthy for supporters to encourage her to do it. But it’s not okay to completely ignore her PAC’s official response to matters which are seemingly being used to grow something in her name that she has nothing to do with.

An all too familiar scene was enacted on the campus of Swarthmore College during a meeting on May 4th to discuss demands by student activists for the college to divest itself of its investments in companies that dealt in fossil fuels.

As a speaker was beginning a presentation to show how many millions of dollars such a disinvestment would cost the college, student activists invaded the meeting, seized the microphone and shouted down a student who rose in the audience to object.

Although there were professors and administrators in the room — including the college president — apparently nobody had the guts to put a stop to these storm trooper tactics. Nor is it likely that there will be any punishment of those who put their own desires above the rights of others.

On the contrary, these students went on to demand mandatory campus “teach-ins,” and the administration caved on that demand. Among their other demands are that courses on ethnic studies, and on gender and sexuality, be made a requirement for graduation.

Just what is it that academics have to fear if they stand up for common decency, instead of letting campus barbarians run amok? At a prestigious college like Swarthmore, every student who trampled on other people’s rights could be expelled and there would be plenty of replacement students available to take their places.

Attorney General Eric Holder, who recused himself in the AP case, told NPR last week that he’s “not sure” how many times he’s authorized the obtaining of journalists’ records. Holder declined to comment last week as to whether he recused himself from another ongoing investigation believed to focus on the reporting of New York Times correspondent David Sanger.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in a statement Monday that the office was “limited” in what it could share because of the ongoing prosecution.

“The government exhausted all reasonable non-media alternatives for collecting this evidence before seeking court approval for a search warrant. Based on the investigation and all of the facts known to date, no other individuals, including the reporter, have been charged since Mr. Kim was indicted nearly three years ago,” the statement said.

Fox News executive VP Michael Clemente said Monday in a statement that the network is “outraged to learn today that James Rosen was named a criminal co-conspirator for simply doing his job as a reporter.”

“In fact, it is downright chilling,” Clemente continued. “We will unequivocally defend his right to operate as a member of what up until now has always been a free press.”

Via Fox News:

Majorities of American voters say their family will be worse off under the Affordable Care Act, and think it would be better to go back to the pre-ObamaCare health care system.

A Fox News poll released Wednesday finds that while 26 percent of voters say their health care situation will be better under the new law, twice as many — 53 percent — say it will be worse. Another 13 percent say it won’t make a difference…

Young voters and seniors are pessimistic about ObamaCare. Majorities of those under age 35 and those 65+ think things will be worse under the 2010 health care law.

That helps explains why a 56-percent majority wants to go back to the health care system that was in place in 2009. Some 34 percent would stick with the new law.

Three in ten Democrats would rather go back to the pre-ObamaCare system (30 percent). That view climbs to 55 percent among independents and 85 percent among Republicans.

The desire to go back to the 2009 system is widespread. Majorities of higher and lower income groups feel that way, as do men, women, voters with and without college degrees, and voters across all age groups.

Republicans can’t rely on Obama’s scandals alone in 2014. They have to relentlessly hammer away at Democrats on Obamacare. The more people are exposed to it, the more they realize what a disaster it is. If Republicans stay on point, 2014 can be another 2010. Maybe even better.

1. No one seems to be able to name the players. Last week, former acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller claimed he had identified “rogue” employees at the IRS’s Cincinnati office who were at the center of the scandal. But an IRS staffer at the Cincinnati office at the center of the scandal told the Washington Post this week: “Everything comes from the top. We don’t have any authority to make those decisions without someone signing off on them. There has to be a directive.”

Perhaps that’s why on Friday, Miller had this exchange during his House testimony with Representative Kevin Brady (R., Texas) .

Brady: “Who is responsible for targeting these individuals?”

Miller: “I don’t have names for you.”

Later, Representative Dave Reichert (R., Wash.) confronted Miller: “I’m disappointed. I’m hearing, ‘I don’t know. I don’t remember. I don’t recall. I don’t believe. Who knew?’ You don’t even know who investigated the case, but yet you say it was investigated. . . . You’re not instilling a lot of confidence.” Reichert pressed on, asking whom senior technical adviser Nancy Marks had identified as responsible for the targeting policy. Miller repeated his mantra of the day: ?“I don’t remember.”

One possible reason for the failure to reveal names is that it takes time for all the players to get their stories straight.
